Clinical Swallowing Evaluation

During a clinical swallowing evaluation, we first obtain a medical history and perform a physical exam to identify any underlying medical conditions or structural abnormalities that may affect swallowing. We then assess the patient's ability to swallow different types of food and liquids, including water, thickened liquids, and pureed food.

We use various techniques to evaluate the patient's swallowing function, such as observing the patient as they swallow, listening for abnormal sounds during swallowing, and assessing the strength and coordination of the muscles involved in swallowing. We may also use special instruments, such as a videofluoroscopic swallow study or fiberoptic endoscopic evaluation of swallowing, to provide a more detailed assessment of the patient's swallowing function.

Based on the results of the clinical swallowing evaluation, we make recommendations for safe and effective swallowing strategies and may also recommend modifications to the patient's diet and/or liquid consistency. In some cases, we may recommend further testing or refer the patient to other healthcare professionals for additional evaluation and treatment.

Overall, a clinical swallowing evaluation is an important tool for us to identify and manage dysphagia and promote safe and effective swallowing function for our patients.
